Australia Opens New Doors for Global Investors

Australia is entering a new chapter in its capital markets, with reforms designed to make the country more attractive to international companies and investors. The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) is rolling out initiatives that not only strengthen competition at home but also encourage greater foreign participation in public markets. For global businesses, these changes represent an important signal: Australia is open for investment and ready to provide more flexible ways to raise capital.

One of the most significant developments is ASIC’s assessment of Cboe Australia’s application to operate as a listings market alongside the ASX. Cboe is already a well-established player in global markets, and its entry would introduce genuine competition to Australia’s listing landscape. For international companies, this means more choice in how to access Australian investors and a market structure that better reflects global standards.

At the same time, ASIC is expanding the recognition of foreign markets. By approving access to Cboe’s US and Canadian exchanges and the Canadian Securities Exchange (CSE), ASIC is deepening Australia’s integration into the global financial system. These connections will make it easier for capital to flow both ways, giving Australian investors more opportunities abroad while encouraging international issuers to consider Australia as a secondary or even primary market.

ASIC is also pursuing complementary reforms that matter for international companies, including:

  • Simplifying dual listings, so that foreign businesses can raise capital in Australia without giving up their presence in home markets
  • Supporting innovation, such as licensing tokenised platforms like FCX to expand investment opportunities
  • Improving market competition, through clearing and settlement reforms that lower barriers to entry and encourage new players

For overseas companies, these reforms could not come at a better time. Australia combines a robust, transparent regulatory system with one of the world’s largest and most stable retirement savings pools, providing a deep source of capital for investment. With competition for listings intensifying worldwide, the steps being taken now are designed to ensure Australia remains an attractive, globally connected option for raising funds.
